It’s easy to feel stressed out these days, between work, studying, kids, family, eating, exercise… we all have a lot on our plate. What’s not always as easy is trying to balance that stress with time outdoors.

Have you ever heard someone comparing trail running (or any form of running) to therapy? Have you ever felt the immediate mental benefit from spending time outdoors on the trails, in the mountains or on the ocean?

Here are five reasons why you should be making time for being outdoors and in nature and the benefits you’ll get from it!

  1. Being in nature promotes happy feelings. It allows you to breathe, relax and decompress in a natural environment, reducing stress and anxiety.
  2. Our everyday exposure to fluorescent lights and noise from computer screens at work, followed by TV screens and cell phones at home is energy sapping. While the sounds and scents of nature are invigorating and energy giving.
  3. When we step away from the hustle and bustle of everyday demands and checklists, and immerse ourselves in the outdoors, the natural environment promotes mental clarity, increased creativity and focus.
  4. The outdoors gives you a sense of perspective. It creates an appreciation for beauty seemingly making life’s everyday problems insignificant. It encourages you to realise what’s important, and what you most value in life.
  5. Lastly, being outdoors creates a connection between you and the earth, it brings about a sense of feeling grounded and content. It allows you to realign with your natural self, realising we are not separate from – but an integral part of it all.
